What is The Balance and Mobility Clinic of Columbus?

The program, the first of its kind in Columbus was started in 2004 and two years later, was enhanced to utilize computerized dynamic posturography.

The only comprehensive balance and mobility assessment program in central Ohio, it determines an individual's balance score and risk for falls. This innovative testing approach encompasses a team of practitioners, which may include a physician, physical therapist, occupational therapist and others.
The process is:
  • 1. An in-home assessment with physical therapist prior to clinic appointment which includes:
    • a physical therapy assessment of the individual
    • home safety screening
  • 2. A clinic appointment which can include:
    • physician assessment when indicated
      • review of pre-screen assessment
      • interview with individual (and caregiver when indicated)
      • systems review
      • medication review
    • physical therapist assessments
      • standardized functional assessment
      • computerized sensory integration assessment
Consultation will also include:
  • Identifying risk factors that can lead to balance difficulties, falls and subsequent injuries.
  • Reviewing test results, provide information and help implement individualized treatment recommendations.
  • Addressing concerns and fears of the individual and caregiver.
  • Providing patient-specific recommendations for comprehensive home safety based on accessibility assessment to address trouble areas both in and outside of home; e.g, ramps, stairs, lighting, and so on.
  • Recommendations to other health professionals as needed.

Take the balance quiz – what do you know about falls? Provided by NIH Senior Health.

Statistics regarding falls:
  • More than one third of adults 65 and older fall each year in the United States
  • Among older adults, falls are the leading cause of injury deaths.
  • Falls are also the most common cause of non-fatal injuries and hospital admissions for trauma.
  • Improving one’s ability to move around safely in the home and community, and without fear of falling, can reduce the need for long-term placement.

Some famous fallers include Bob Dole, Kurt Vonnegut, Dr. Robert Atkins and others.

The Centers for Disease Control offers a wealth of information about older adults and falls. Click here http://www.cdc.gov/ncipc/duip/preventadultfalls.htm to learn more. The National Institutes of Health offers Simple facts about Falls and Older Adults.
